Event description
The event took place on Thursday, 21 November, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM at the premises of the INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC RELATIONS, in Athens centre. It was attended by 30 people, from Greece and Turkey.
Workshop Objectives: The participating academics and members of NGO’s and private sector explored and discussed (brainstorm) how the second track diplomacy (Green energy as well as mitigation and resilience against climate change) could be used as a method of solving some specific issues which concern the societies of both countries relative to the climate change and more particularly the issues of sea pollution, protection from wildfires and clean energy development.
The main aim, therefore, is not to resolve the bilateral political issues that divide the two countries but to facilitate networking opportunities for NGOs, to share best practices, to exchange lessons learned from the recent past , and proposing strategies that can potentially be discussed by NGOs,
stakeholders, such as research centers/institutes, municipalities, and academic organizations. Another aim of the workshop is to encourage the active participation of civil society organizations in the process of second-track diplomacy by recognizing the positive contributions of civil society and the private sector in fostering understanding and building bridges between the communities of Greece and Turkey.
The chair holder had the opportunity in his introductory remarks to present the objectives and the vision of the Jean Monnet Chair asking the other participants for feedback and future collaboration on the topics the chair deals with.
The event included three thematic sessions on Sea pollution, Green Energy and protection from wildfires cause by mainly due to the altering climate change conditions in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Overall, the conference comprehensively discussed aspects of the consequences of the ongoing climate change in the region and solutions for mitigation and resilience against it and of course the role of the European Union in this context. Due to the variety of the participants (academics, NGOs, experts) the discussion managed to cover many different aspects of the current energy architecture and the prevailing environmental conditions in the Eastern Mediterranean. Apart from it, the participants discussed the current options for further collaboration and fundraising.
