Dr. George Halkos is Professor in Economics of Natural Resources. He is an economist who has graduated from the Department of Economics at the University of Piraeus (Greece). He holds a Master of Sciences (M.Sc) in Project Analysis, Finance and Investment and a Doctorate of Philosophy (D.Phil) in Cost-Benefit Analysis with the use of Mathematical Models and Game Theory and with application to Environmental Economics from the Economics Department of the University of York (England).
In the first terms of the academic years 2010-11 and 2011-12 he taught the course Environmental Economics and Valuation of Environmental Goods in the Master course of the International and European Economic Studies in the Athens University of Economics and Business. In the second term of the current academic year 2012-13 he is teaching the course Economic Analysis and Policies for the Environment, Natural Resources and Energy in the Master course of the International and European Economic Studies in the Athens University of Economics and Business.
He has worked as team leader and research fellow in various research and academic institutions as the University of Piraeus, the Athens University of Economics (former ASOEE), the University of the Aegean, the Stockholm Environment Institute, the Panteion University, the ATEI, etc. for research projects financed by the European Union (PHARE programs), the Hellenic Republic Ministry of Development, the National Statistical Service of Greece, the EUROSTAT, the Ministry of Employment, etc.
He has participated and presented articles in International Conferences organised by the ENI, the Centre of European Economics of London, the Royal Economic Society, etc. He acts as a referee in various scientific journals as the Ecological Economics, Energy Economics, Environmental and Resource Economics, Energy Policy, Economic Modelling, Empirica, Environment and Development Economics, Journal of Cleaner Production, Journal of Public Economics, Public Choice, Resource and Energy Economics, Empirical Economics, Annals of Operations Research, Journal of Applied Business Research, Management Accounting Research, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Industrial Ecology, Journal of Environmental Management, Technology Analysis and Strategic Management, International Business Review, Environmental Engineering and Management Journal, Greener Management International (The Journal of Corporate Environmental Strategy and Practice), Research in International Business and Finance, European Journal of Operational Research, Applied Mathematics and Computation, Journal of Modelling in Management, Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, Contemporary Economic Policy etc.
He is the Director of the Operations Research Laboratory and Associate Editor in the journal Environment and Development Economics (Cambridge University Press).
He was the Director of Postgraduate Studies in the Department of Economics at the University of Thessaly entitled "Applied Economics" for 4 academic years (2007-2011) and the Deputy Head of the Department of Economics for 4 academic years (2009-2013).
His research interests are in the fields of Applied Statistics and Econometrics, Simulations of Economic Modelling, Environmental Economics, Applied Micro-economic with emphasis in Welfare Economics, Air Pollution, Game Theory, Mathematical Models (Non-Linear Programming).
